Toward School and Community Musical Engagements

Kari K. Veblen

Introduction

This chapter examines music making and education extending beyond the music classroom to include community settings, taking as a premise that community music is context sensitive, dynamic, and culturally prescribed. The diversity of music making in the community can naturally interact, intersect, or enhance what happens in the school music curriculum.

Music education and community music take a variety of forms responsive to their location. As a person born in the United States and currently living in Canada, I find it is useful to adopt a North American perspective, as an international scope would necessitate volumes. Contexts, structures, and stakeholders in the United States and Canada share enough similarities to consider them together.

This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on community music as found in North America, using a typology to impose order upon the spacious canvas of music making. The second part considers musical engagements between schools and communities through examples drawn from current research.
